Civil War Volunteers and Conscripted Men

Many men who volunteered for the Civil War, or were conscripted, were first generation Americans

Moritz Tschoepe was born in Germany, emigrated to the United States, and volunteered for the 14th Wisconsin Infantry

My 2nd-great-grandfather Patrick Hannigan faced this Civil War draft wheel when they pulled his name for the draft. He was to report to the local war headquarters in Lockport NY on August 31, 1863. As it happens, Patrick may not have had to serve. His cousin Sergeant James Hannigan  had perished at Gettysburg in July, only one month prior.
