Michael Patrick O'Malley, my great-grandfather, and four of his five siblings left Newport, County Mayo for America at the beginning of the 20th century. One devoted son, Peter, stayed with his mother, Rose. While we always assumed they left for economic reasons, it appears our particular branch of O'Malleys may not have left Ireland because of economic or political troubles, but domestic...

"Cloonfoher is a village blow Newport, in the Burrishoole direction, and a pair of Peter O'Malley's father and son reside there, in the same domicile with Mrs. Rose O'Malley's, the mother of the younger namesake of the apostle and the endearing spouse of the elder gentleman, who probably can claim kindred with grain herself. No matter about these --- considerations, it would appear that the O'Malley household in Cloonfoher is not a sample of domestic happiness as the senior Peter had his dearly beloved offspring Peter the younger summoned to-day, on a charge of a grievous assault and arrayed on his side forensic advocay of Mr. M. J. Jordan, solicitor, while his progeny, ..."
