The Dieden and Herting Families

The Diedens
John, Nicholaus, and Anton Dieden were born in Ebernburg, Bavaria between 1835 and 1840. Their mother, Agnes Schmitt, and their father Stephan came from a long history of families from Ebernburg.

The boys' father, Stephan Dieden died in 1843 and Agnes married Johann Herting, another Ebernburg native. Their son, William, was born in 1846 and they all emigrated to Chicago in 1848.

In this 1860 census, the Herting family is living in the 7th ward and John is employed in a Commerce ? Store.

In the 1870 census, John, Agnes, and William are living in the 19th ward between Chicago Avenue, Franklin and Division.

The next year, the family's business will be lost in the Great Chicago Fire. (This map below shows different ward numbers.)

By the 1880 census, Agnes has died and is buried in St. Boniface cemetery. John lives on Market Street now part of Wacker Drive. Young William married and he and his bride, Julia, live with their father.

John Herting became the County Commissioner and a very prominent citizen of Chicago although the appointment of his step-son, John Dieden, to run the Insane Asylum was not a popular decision.

as evidenced by the many articles and his obituary in the German-American newspaper, Illinois Staats-Zeitung.
